Date #16: The Weekender, Part II

Guest author, Kit.

I went out with The Weekender again on Saturday. Leading up to the date, I was getting less and less excited for it. I know, you're supposed to get more excited as you get closer to the date. He and I had continued to talk in the two weeks up to our date, which I originally liked. Then, he started talking to me ALL THE TIME. I mean, all the time, and it was about nothing! I'm fine talking about nothing, mundane, "How was your day?" stuff when you're in a relationship and actually know what the other person is talking about. For example, I told him I visited my old camp and told him it was weird. I expected questions such as "Where is your camp?" "Why was it weird?" "How long did you go to camp for", or any questions along those lines considering I had never told him anything about camp. Instead, I got: "Well, that's understandable." Camp, by the way, was a huge part of my life for ten years and still means a lot to me. I think this was the beginning of the end. I also got a few early morning texts (5:30am, 7:00am, 7:30am) just to say "Good morning, beautiful." Cute. Right? Maybe if we'd been dating for a while and been out more than once.

I digress. On to the date.

Everyone kept telling me I need to give him another chance, even if he was being creepy and weird, so I kept our date for Saturday. On Thursday, I asked him what we were doing and he didn't know, said he would think about it and let me know. I drove home from North Carolina that morning and got home around 4:30. I messaged him when I got home and asked where we were going. He didn't know. Kept asking me where I wanted to go. I had told him that I wanted him to choose since I chose last time. Finally he picked Willow, a little place in Ballston. I thought it was great since I had never been there before, but always pass it on my way to the metro. A little after 5, I get a message that he can't get a reservation for 7 and he will meet me there at 6, so I quickly threw something on and left the house.

I got there first and sat at the bar with a glass of water. He met me there and greeted me with a kiss. We got our table and decided on a bottle of wine to split. We also picked out an appetizer, a delicious flat bread. I had picked out my entree and closed my menu accordingly. The waiter kept coming over to ask if we were ready to order and The Weekender kept saying we hadn't looked yet. Finally, I just told him I was ready to order and was waiting for him to choose. Poor guy was really embarrassed.

The conversation was just ok during dinner. I mean, it flowed nicely, but had a kind of awkwardness to it. I know I was not as animated as I was on our first date, but I was trying. I really was. The food was only so-so for the price. The did have bacon on EVERYTHING, so a win there for Willow. We did also split a dessert, a peach/blueberry cobbler, yum!

After dinner we didn't sit around talking for a long time, but the waiter was also trying to turn over the table. We went outside and he made a comment about how it was too hot to walk around, and what did I want to do then. Rather annoyed that he had not put any effort into planning this date, including what we were going to do after dinner, I told him I was tired from my drive and needed to go home. He kissed me goodnight and I left.

Needless to say, I don't think I'll be going out with The Weekender again.

Here's hoping to find another guy, preferably one who will not move into relationship mode immediately after our first date.

Date #15: Weekender

Guest author, Kit

I met The Weekender on Saturday night in Dupont Circle. I was pretty excited for this date because The Weekender and I had been talking for two weeks leading up to this date. He travels four days a week for work and is typically only in DC on the weekends. It took us those two weeks of talking to both be in DC for the same weekend. Frustrating that it took this long, but he seemed like a good guy and I hoped he'd be worth the wait.

He was waiting for me outside of Circa when I got off the metro. I was hot and tired already due to the delays on the metro (thank you scheduled track maintenance on a Saturday night). When I saw him, I immediately felt under-dressed as he was wearing nice slacks and a button down shirt. He made me feel at ease when he greeted me with a huge smile and a hug. The weekender is about 5'10", so with my heels we were a pretty good match height wise. He's not the typical guy that I might go for, but attractive nonetheless.

It was a nice night, so we decided to sit outside for dinner. He also clearly knows the way to my heart because he asked if we wanted to split a bottle of wine. Obviously, the answer was yes. The conversation was really easy and we talked about everything. School. Family. Work. Embarrassing stories. Travel. Even a bit of religion and future talk thrown in there. I feel like I spent the whole night laughing.

Dinner was definitely secondary for us, even though the food was amazing. We split an appetizer (tomato and mozzarella) and a dessert (brownie sundae), both of which were delicious. I'm pretty sure there's nothing on that menu that wouldn't be fantastic. I highly recommend Circa, despite it being on the pricey side.

After dinner, we sat and talked for a while longer. I felt kind of bad for the waitress because she couldn't turn over our table, but after a while we decided to go for a walk. We walked through the neighborhoods off of the Circle and ended up down on L Street, so I suggested we go for a drink on M Street. I took him to The Sign of the Whale, which looks like a little hole in the wall bar right next to Camelot. Trust me, Sign of the Whale is a whole lot classier than Camelot ever will be. We both got beers and kept on talking. They were playing great music that night (90's music, some of my favs). The Weekender and I both got some singing time in on those songs and reminisced about middle school.

Eventually, I decided I should probably head back to the metro. He walked me back to the metro. As I was about to turn around and go down to the metro, he kissed me! A pretty good kiss too. We said goodnight and said we'd talk later. He actually messaged me Sunday morning and we have another date lined up for when he's back in town. I'm excited to see what's going to happen with The Weekender!

Date #14: Peace Corps

by Guest Author, Kit

Elle is right! Coming up with the nicknames is the hardest part. I really struggled with coming up with a nickname for this guy. He was in the Peace Corps in El Salvador for just over two years. He's spent a lot of time in South America, so I considered something like South of the Border, but couldn't bring myself to do it.

I was really nervous before my date tonight. I'd never been on a date with someone I met online before, so I was pretty anxious about this one. Peace Corps and I didn't spend a lot of time chatting before the date, so I really wasn't sure what to expect.

We met at Restaurant 3 in Clarendon tonight, presumably for drinks. I got there first, of course, and waited out front for him. He came around the corner and gave me a big hug right away. At first glance, I wasn't sure I felt about him. He's about 5' 10" and already starting to bald a bit, but not unattractive.

We got a table and ordered drinks. I got Sam Adams Blackberry Witbier (delicious) and he got a Belgian ale. Neither of us had had dinner, so Peace Corps suggested we also get some food. Both of us got an appetizer. He got fried oysters and I got muscles. The food was good. We both ate off the other's plate and the conversation was very comfortable.

Most of the conversation consisted of the typical get to know you questions, but we delved into a few deeper topics as well. There were very few pauses in the conversation and we seemed to get along nicely. After he paid, we decided to head out because I have a train to catch at 6:30 tomorrow morning. He said he'd be in touch, so we'll see what happens. I think I'd like to see Peace Corps again and see what happens.

I apologize if the writing is not as interesting as Elle's. The blog world is new to me, but she is the one who inspired me to look for someone online!

Caught, part II, by The Catch

Caught, Part 2

I don’t want to hijack Elle’s blog by retelling each date story, but date #3 was memorable. For me, there were several pertinent things I wanted to know, and rock climbing was a perfect way to find the answers: Can she laugh and do something physical at the same time? If she struggles, how will she respond? Will she enjoy this enough to want to try other new activities with me? In the end, my excitement was completely justified. I have never had so much fun with someone I’ve only known 2 weeks. We belayed for each other, teased one other, showed affection, and laughed a lot. Three dates in and I wanted this to go somewhere. That spooked me.

I was surprised to hear from her again on Friday morning. We had plans to go trap shooting on Sunday, but afterwards it looked like it would be a few weeks before we could see each other again thanks to poorly aligned travel schedules. Elle gchated me: “I was thinking about us not seeing each other for nearly 2 weeks and it made me sad.” – “I feel the same.” – “I know, you told me that last night. And I laughed at you.” You can’t teach her kind of charm.

On Sunday, I learned about the blog, about the journey, and about where I stood. I’m not the jealous type and never one to make assumptions, including that in the first two weeks of knowing a person, someone would forego all other dating. My first reaction was “damn, that’s an awesome idea. I wish I had thought of it!” Then she admitted that she was ready to abandon the project and only date me (quitter).

She sat me down and had me read a few entries. The story was even more compelling than the overarching idea! I read about her first two dates, then skipped ahead to “The Catch.” It felt a little like I was invading her privacy, akin to peeking into one’s personal diary, but she insisted it was ok. I read. I blushed. It was reassuring knowing that she was enjoying spending time with me as much as I with her, and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit it was a bit of an ego boost that our dates stood out amidst the recent flurry. As I read, I wanted the story to keep going. Only a jerk would cancel this mid-season! Then it occurred to me that I was that jerk. And I also realized it meant that I got to spend that much more time with her.

I started my version of the story with an apology. In truth, it was only half-hearted. I still love this idea and I hope someone takes up Elle’s pen, but I can’t help but smile thinking about the coming weeks and the fun we’ll have together.

Caught, part I, by The Catch

Caught, Part 1, by The Catch

I should probably begin with an apology. I love this blog; it’s a creative and adventurous idea, entertaining to read, and has all the drama of a deliciously addictive reality dating show. And I ruined it for you.

Let me back up a smidge. Not 3 weeks ago I went on a pretty incredible first date with a girl I met online. We talked, we laughed, we ate and drank. The conversation never hit an awkward lull over the 4 hours it lasted. I hope this doesn’t read as shallow as it sounds in my head, but based on my experience, online-dating profile photos are rarely an accurate portrayal of how a person looks. Elle’s photos were cute (obviously, I was excited about the date), but in person I was blown away. Her eyes, her smile… I’m getting off track. I walked away from this date repeating to myself “don’t mess this one up, play it cool.” I’m a planner, so over the next few days I put together a second date idea should she want to see me again. And she did!

Communication was sparse leading up to date #2 and I wasn’t sure what to make of that. I shrugged it off and thought, “Maybe she’s just not into texting. Get out of your head. And remember to buy milk.” I prepped the ceviche at work, made sure the wine was chilled, and changed my shirt- I was excited and ready. Of course, by the time I met up with Elle at the park, I was drenched in sweat. The ceviche still had to be put together, so I pulled out the ziplock bag of tuna in order to drain the lime juice it was marinating in. “Gotta be honest, that doesn’t look very good.” She’s busting my chops already, I love it. Date #2 conversation was both lighter and deeper than #1. The animal impressions were adorable, but when she busted out the camp songs I was smitten. The kiss… *smiles* the kiss was good. In the event this date went as well as I had hoped it would, I was ready with ideas for date #3. That night, we made plans to go climbing the following Thursday.

Seeking co-authors

I am taking a break from this blog and am now dating The Catch exclusively. I saw him last night and let him read my blog. He liked it, and he especially liked that he was the last man standing. His reaction to the whole thing was exactly what I was hoping for.

I hate to just quit the project entirely, so I had the idea of asking any single people, men or women, in the DC or Baltimore (yeah, I got your back, Sage) area to contribute. Take it as an opportunity to try something new, and if you've ever been curious about online dating, now you have an excuse. If you are interested, let me know!

The Catch: part IV and V

I saw a lot of The Catch this weekend, and some big things happened. After our rock climbing date, I couldn't wait to see him again. I knew we had our skeet shooting date on Sunday, but I invited him over for Wii American Idol Karaoke and True Blood on Saturday night. He brought pizza and we shared some awesome Castle Rock pinot noir. Before the date, I had told a few people that if the night went well, I might be ready to pause this project and date only him. The night was wonderful.

Today, we still went skeet shooting. I'd never shot a gun before, but The Catch coached me through. Bull Run Shooting Range offers beginner classes, but neither of us wanted me to have to do that, so I pretended I'd done it before and let The Catch explain the whole thing step by step. Skeet shooting is kind of awesome. Unfortunately, the pigeons that we were aiming at were made of clay, but it still felt rewarding hitting them. And yeah, I hit 9 of them! Out of...50...

After a short accidental detour, we had some time before we had to go to our respective Fourth of July BBQs. We came back to my apartment and just hung out here for a while. The Catch showed off his superior guitar skills. He has a nice voice, even though Paula, Randy, and Simon disagreed last night.

Then, we started talking about feelings. Normally, this is where I run for the nearest exit, but I wanted to tell him how I felt about him, and it came so easily. I had to come clean about the blog, before either of us got any more invested. He took the news well, or at least acted like he was okay with it. Maybe I can find a co-author to take over for awhile?

The Surprise: part III

The Surprise unfortunately ends here. The night was awkward. I went into the date thinking, it's do or die for him. I don't want to string anyone along, and after three dates, it should be clear whether or not there is potential for anything. This date doesn't count toward the 40 either, so it's okay that it was a duplicate date of the Bubble. The Surprise and I went to see Toy Story 3 (I agreed to see it again with him) and got ice cream after.

I'm not going to go into too many details, but I just wasn't feeling it with him tonight. It's also the first date that I've had someone else on my mind. Up to this date, I have been able to focus 100% on each guy, but tonight I was thinking about The Catch. I felt really bad, because I know The Surprise noticed something was different. I had to carry the conversation, but I felt like I was making a lot of small talk. Ugh, it was just bad.

Taking a break

My mom thinks I should extend my deadline, so I can focus more closely on some of these guys. Thoughts?

The Catch: part III

Though this date doesn't count towards the forty, I do want to debrief. The Catch took me rock climbing in Rockville. I've been fighting a migraine all day, but I really did not want to cancel on him, so I powered through. We met in Cleveland Park and metroed up to Rockville. We had a little while to kill before our lesson, so we got smoothies and split a sandwich.

The Catch had already signed us up for the three hour class, and had paid for it too. It wasn't cheap, so it surprised me a lot. He's done a decent amount of climbing before, so I'm sure he was getting antsy sitting through the beginners class with me, but he didn't show it. He was a good sport and made jokes to the class. I remember sitting there next to him thinking, I could see us doing anything together and having fun. Little by little over the night, the boyfriend-y gestures came out, and it was nice to see his affectionate side.

We also almost wore onesies to climb in. The idea started yesterday when we were texting to make plans for tonight. I asked him what I should wear, and he jokingly said that he usually climbs in footie pajamas. I texted back that I actually own two onesies, and wouldn't it be a riot if we wore them? He wrote back telling me that he really does have a cow onesie. But, today, on my way to meet him, I totally chickened out and decided to wait until at least the 4th date to bust those out. I appreciated the idea though. I don't know what it is about men and onesies that I love so much. I think it's just a sign that they are comfortable enough with themselves to look like a complete idiot.

He's also really good at rock climbing, and is in excellent shape. I felt completely useless compared to him. I made it to the top of all the walls we climbed in the class, but then after class we headed over to the bouldering area, where the good people hang out. I could tell they were good because they owned their own chalk bags. They meant business. The Catch was very impressive as he bounced around like a monkey. I tried a couple routes but failed miserably.

After climbing, we stopped at Atomic Bar in Cleveland Park quickly for a drink. I was nervous to take him there because the bartender reads this blog and I worried she might slip something out like, "Oh, which one is this?" Of course, she didn't say anything like that at all, and now she knows that The Catch is in fact real.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to get to see The Catch much in the next few weeks. He's going to California next week and I'm going to New England the week after. He wanted to spend the 4th with me, but I'm going to Baltimore. We've started a mental list of things to do together, including camping, painting pottery (there's a place near us that allows you to bring your own wine and food), and trying out a new restaurant in Cleveland Park. Actually, we are going skeet shooting on Sunday morning before I go to Baltimore. I had to laugh to myself at his suggestion to do that, after last night's date with the skeet shooter. I guess some overlap like that is inevitable. They're guys, after all.

Date #13: Lab Rat

Coming up with nicknames is the hardest part about this! Last night's date works in an HIV Research Lab, which is why I chose that. I was also considering Bear, Skeet-Shooter, or something about Country.

I really need to go into each date with a fresh, open mind. It's difficult to do that when I have a few good guys on my mind, and thinking about another first date feels like a job. I hadn't talked to Lab Rat for a few weeks, either, so I didn't remember much about him. We had tried to make plans two weeks ago but couldn't work it out. I almost dismissed him, but fortunately, he was persistent.

Yesterday was perfect weather in DC, a much needed break from the two straight weeks of 90+ heat. I wanted to do something outdoors, so I found a restaurant in Chinatown with an outdoor patio, plus over 300 beers to choose from. Score. The place is called RFD, and I don't know how I missed it for three years. I must not have ever gone further than its neighbor, the Irish pub Fado.

Lab Rat is about 5'10 and has a big dude build. He played baseball in college. He's half Greek, half Polish. He has a sweet face, and his eyes crinkle up when he smiles. He is 8 days younger than me, and is also the middle child. He lives with his brother, who is almost 28, and looks nothing like him. Apparently, Lab Rat looks Greek and his brother looks Polish. The brother also is frequently told that he looks like Pacey. Time out. Can I date the brother, if things don't work out with Lab Rat? I was in love with Pacey (Joshua Jackson's character on Dawson's Creek) for years. That might be poor form though.

We had plenty to talk about, and he was definitely nice to look at. My phone rang, and he was quite impressed with my 24 ringtone. It's just a Cisco ringtone, but I finally found someone who appreciates it. He's also a big fan of country music. Lab Rat is from northern Pennsylvania, which was where he learned how to skeet and trap shoot. He participates in state competitions, and I haven't decided if that's weird or hot. He's definitely a guy's guy. Yay!

After about 3 hours at RFD, we left and were going to walk around the mall, but realized that the metro stopped running soon, so we walked to the station. No hand holding or kiss goodbye, but I want a second date.

Date #12: The Surprise, part II

My second date with The Surprise was scheduled for tomorrow. We were going to do karaoke. But, I got back this evening around 5:00 from an 8 hour drive, and couldn't wait to see him, so I called to see if he was actually free tonight.

He suggested we go out for dinner at Bistro du Coin in Dupont, a place my friend Kristen has talked about many times. It was a great choice, because it was good food, a fun atmosphere, but not at all stuffy or over the top. I wanted to try some of the more adventurous French dishes (frog legs were not on the menu, unfortunately), but he seems to need a little push in that direction. It was obvious that The Surprise would be a thoughtful boyfriend. He confessed later that he made backup reservations at another restaurant, a nicer one based on chocolate. He seemed to be taking mental notes of where I might want to go on future dates.

The best thing about The Surprise is his sense of humor. We have such a comfortable, lively repertoire. He plays off my quirks, like we've known each other for a long time.

We also were able to continue talking about more serious things, like dating and relationships. He's not the type to jump into a relationship immediately, but is also optimistic and open to the idea. He's the Ted character in How I Met Your Mother. Well, he told me that when I asked which one he was most like, but then again, there are only three dudes to choose from. We also determined that The Surprise has U.K.S., Ugly Kid Syndrome. For those who don't know, this occurs when a person was an ugly/overweight/awkward kid, and therefore had to develop a good personality to make up for his/her lack of good looks. They usually develop a great sense of humor as a coping mechanism. Eventually, these ugly kids mature and become good looking adults, but still have great personalities without any arrogance. They may even have a bit of a complex or two, if you're really lucky.

I was more nervous about this date than any I've had so far, I think. The first one went so well, that I worried the second wouldn't live up to it. There is only one thing that worries me about The Surprise. He reminds me of a past boyfriend in a few ways, some good, some less good, but most importantly, he lacks the rugged manliness I really like. Then again, I learned from my recent ex that I want to find someone loving and affectionate, which The Surprise seems to be. Ideally, a man would be both; is that too much to ask? Still, all in all, The Surprise is wonderful, and definitely someone I want to keep dating.

Date #11: The Catch, part II

My second date with The Catch was lovely. He planned it well, and it was right up my alley. It was simple, but romantic and laid back. He suggested that we go to a free rock-cover-band concert in Farragut Square and bring a picnic. I love anything free, and I love picnics. It was record-breaking heat, but it did cool down a little bit (ie. I didn't want to kill myself). DC has lots of free concert series in the summer, and it's a great thing to do on a date. The Catch really went above and beyond to impress me though, by making his own ceviche and bringing wine for our picnic. I just ran across the street to pick up a piece of cake from Something Sweet, for dessert. I appreciated the effort he put in, and he obviously was trying hard but not too hard.

I love talking to The Catch, and I feel like we can talk about everything. He noted that on our first date, we already covered everything you are never supposed to talk about on a first date (religion, exes, and politics). He claims to not be political, but he does have strong beliefs on social issues. I told him that frankly, I admire people that spend their lives standing up for what they believe in, but that I am not, nor will I ever be, one of those people. He said he was the same way, but I'm not sure if I believe him.

We talked about so much, that I can't even describe the conversation. There were some more serious topics and some very light ones. I still felt comfortable around him, and even performed my impressions. He was especially impressed by the dolphin.

At one point, he said "Choose A or B." I chose A, and he said, "When are you free?" I told him next Thursday, and he said, "Ok, we're doing something next Thursday. Wear athletic clothes." I am too impatient for surprises, so I egged it out of him. Canoeing? No. Hiking? No. (Darn!) Horseback riding? No. Paddleboating? No. Canoeing? No. Hiking? Still no. Ah...Rock climbing? Smile. So, we're going indoor climbing next week. I think The Catch is the type of guy that would be fun to do anything with. By the way, choice B was mini-golfing. I think mini-golfing is inevitable at least once this summer.

We kissed in the park after it got dark and I felt butterflies.

Date #10: CalTech*

Another surprise, but in the opposite direction. I didn't feel any connection with CalTech* (school changed to protect identity), even though this was the date I was most looking forward to, except for maybe Mr. Bach. CalTech seemed like the whole package. He is 5'11 with seemingly a big football player build, and he is obviously smart, having gone to CalTech for undergrad and grad school. CalTech's pictures are also very cute, and he had plenty, so I knew he wasn't just having a good day. We talked on the phone for an hour last week and he sounded wonderful. I could tell he was nerdy, but he seemed to have enough coolness to balance it out. I love nerdy sides to guys, but I learned that CalTech's nerd side was going to dominate.

We met at a tapas restaurant in Georgetown, called Bodega. It was a great place, and actually, we were seated in between two other couples that were either on first dates as well or were at least getting to know each other. It felt a little like speed dating. Every time CalTech and I had an awkward moment (which happened a few times), I'd eavesdrop on the conversations our neighbors were having and use their topics as a jumping off point. The food was great. We got fried bacon wrapped dates as an appetizer, and I could have eaten a whole meal of those. But we also split a paella, which was oily and delicious as well. I feel a little ill right now though.

It's hard to explain why the date didn't feel right. CalTech seems like he has a huge heart and is just looking for someone to share his life with. Unfortunately, he's spent much of his life alone. He talked about being a social outcast in high school, and going to bars and restaurants alone as an adult. He is also 36, which was a yellow flag (not fully red), just because I worried we wouldn't understand each other's references.

A few awkward moments occurred. I accidentally kicked his leg under the table as I switched positions, and I said "sorry" and continued with whatever story I was telling. He waited until I finished my story and said "I gather no sense of remorse." I looked at him funny, and asked, "What?" He repeated the line, and said, "you kicked me. I don't think you're really sorry." Throughout the date, I felt like I was giving courtesy giggles to his awkward jokes. Having recently been on the other side, I know that giggling is just the right thing to do.

The other awkward moment was when he was walking me to my car. We're walking along M Street, and he says "I feel like we keep dodging people" and grabs my hand to hold. I give a little laugh, and say, "Yeah." Then he says, "Plus, I need to help you walk in those treacherous shoes." I was wearing flip flops. I get it, a joke. Haha. Aww, poor CalTech.

I wanted to like CalTech, I really did. But I just didn't. At least I don't have to explain to my conservative grandfather why my new boyfriend is a 36 year old black guy.

I had a voicemail from Bubble waiting for me, and we are going to have a second date next week. I'm also looking forward to a second date with The Catch tomorrow. I talked to my friend today about second dates, and she brought up a good point. If it seems like most of these first dates have been going well, it's because first dates almost always go well. It's not until the second date that you start to really see a person's true colors.

Date #9: Teacher

Another good one! I had lunch today with a 5th grade teacher. I love the idea of dating another teacher and having our summers off together. I'd rather have time with someone than money.

Teacher and I had talked on the phone over the weekend, and he seemed easy to talk to and interesting. He is tall and handsome, 35 years old (I like older men, though 35 is up there), short blond hair, and a nice physique. I know I've written very positive things about my recent dates, but I am being honest, they have all been fun, nice, attractive guys! If nothing else, I hope this blog inspires someone to give online dating a chance. My secret to online dating is this: Use it as a tool to make the initial connection, but don't build a relationship through it. I like to meet the guys within a week of the first email, before he or I build up expectations of one another that may not be met.

We went to Cafe Deluxe in Tyson's Corner, because I came straight from summer school and he lives in the area. It was a very casual lunch, but he was engaging and energetic. Teacher comes from a big family of other teachers, but he has a very realistic attitude toward it. He takes his job seriously, but he also knows how to balance work and play. He's very settled, and just bought a home for himself last year. Both of us being teachers, we had plenty to talk about. I found I was more nervous than normal, maybe because he is 10 years older than me.

After lunch, we walked into Crate and Barrel next door briefly. Nothing particularly funny or note-worthy happened. Compared to last night's date with The Surprise, it wasn't terribly exciting, but I would be an idiot to not want to go out with Teacher again. He suggested we hang out again next week when I get back, and we might go minigolfing.

Date #8: The Surprise

I wasn't expecting tonight's date to go as well as it did. And it went well. Actually, throughout the night (6 hours long), I said to myself and eventually to him, that it was the best first date I've been on, maybe ever.

The Surprise shouldn't have been such a surprise. It validated my reasoning for accepting any date I'm asked on. I had chatted with him for about a week online, but never on the phone, and he seemed like he had a personality that would really match mine, but I quite frankly wasn't sure what he would look like in person. The pictures he had online, and the extra ones he sent me, were a big range. The Surprise reminds me a bit, looks-wise, of my ex Chris, but taller and better looking. He's 6'2 and has a bigger build. He's 27, brown hair, blue eyes, nice smile, fair complexion, a lawyer, an only child from the Jersey Shore (yeah...I know), and...awesome.

I felt a connection with The Surprise immediately. We were supposed to go to Oyamel for margaritas, but the place was packed at 5:30 so we went across the street to Jaleo. Within the first, oh, 15 seconds, he made some crack about me, which I loved. I've never been dissed so fast on a date, and it honestly made me feel so comfortable and REAL, like we've known each other for awhile. I appreciate men that can tease me and be teased, as long as it's a playful display of affection.

Jaleo is a tapas bar, but I can't comment on the food, because we only got drinks and free bread. We were too caught up in conversation to think about eating, but our waiter was so cute and understanding.

At Jaleo, we talked nonstop for about 3 hours. With every new topic of conversation, I kept thinking to myself, this is a match made in heaven. I thought he was lying about things after awhile, because it was too good to be true. Let me think about the things we talked about...love of country music, Disney World, Full House, The Other Sister, and so much more that I can't remember at the moment. He's the only lawyer I've ever met that hates politics. My jaw dropped a few times, as I thought, 'whoa, really?'. I ended up telling The Surprise everything about myself. And when I say everything, I mean everything.

Normally, I consider myself a great dater. I know the rules and I know what not to do. Everything I did tonight was what NOT to do. I told him how much I liked him and how this was the best first date I've been on. I told him that I felt such a strong connection with him. I told him I felt like I could see this working out. We slipped the words "girlfriend", "relationship", and "future" into our conversation, about us. This is not me. I am a serial dater, and I don't fall for boys after one night. I even told him that. He felt the same way. He said he normally waits the standard three days to call, but wants to call me tomorrow. I told him I couldn't wait to talk to him again, and we made plans for next week when I come back from a weekend trip. We are going to do karaoke, which we almost did tonight but decided to wait. I did give him a small preview of A Whole New World on the metro. We played a few rounds of skeeball at Iron Horse, and the stakes that he made up were that the winner got to choose the loser's karaoke song. Love.

This is getting real. Tomorrow, I have two dates lined up, both of which I have been looking forward to. I've talked to both guys on the phone and they both sound wonderful. On Thursday, I have a second date with The Catch. Will I make it to 40 dates before falling for someone?

Date #7: Mr. Bach, part II

Mr. Bach, will you accept this rose?

This boy is seriously cute. Looks-wise, he is is my type wrapped up in one handsome box. I met Mr. Bach for dinner in Georgetown at a Thai restaurant called Bangkok Bistro. I love Thai food, and the food was delicious. Of course, I ordered my usual dish, Pad See Ew, which is always yummy, but the decor and atmosphere were more interesting than most Thai places. Mr. Bach was tired from a long weekend of mountain biking. I was not tired from a long day of putzing around my apartment, cleaning, sleeping, and reading the fourth Twilight book. Mr. Bach was still as cute as I remembered. I was comfortable around him, and he again seemed interested in getting to know me better, though he didn't laugh at my jokes. I realize that my jokes are not always that funny (I get it from my father), but still, I like when my dates give me a little chuckle. Could be his personality though. He seemed like he liked me.

After dinner, we walked down to the Georgetown waterfront area and got a drink at Chadwicks. I noticed that he didn't make eye contact with me the whole time, which bothered me a little bit. Again, not sure if it's just his way, but I take that as a bad sign.

Still, we did kiss goodnight again and he said he'd like to go out again. I'd love to have a third date to see his pretty face again (can't write about it though), but I have a feeling Mr. Bach is going to turn out to be exactly that--a bachelor.

Date #6: Bubble

Last night I met Bubble at Clyde's in Chinatown. Bubble lives out in Virginia, but far out in Virginia. He hasn't spent much time in DC, except at his office and Chinatown, which is why I nicknamed him Bubble. I don't think he's heard of Dupont Circle or Adams Morgan. Not a big deal or anything, but worthy of a nickname. Oh, that, and the fact that he admitted he's a little sheltered (hasn't done much traveling).

The date was the most traditional date I've had in a while. Dinner, movie, ice cream. It was refreshing, and I needed a break from drinking. When I got to Clyde's, he was waiting outside, dressed casually in a striped polo shirt, khaki shorts, and sneakers. Bubble is 28, 5'10, Puerto Rican (born in Pittsburgh), short dark hair, the sweetest looking face imaginable, soft spoken, a software engineer, and a drummer in a band. He seemed like the type that likes to let the girl take the reins. Though, it might just take him some time to open up. He seemed a little nervous at the beginning.

The food at Clyde's was delicious, and I got my favorite sandwich (turkey reuben). He dared me to order it as a "Rachel", and our poor foreign waiter was really confused. Conversation flowed, and a good balance. We talked about the typical stuff. Then I suggested we go next door and see Toy Story 3, because I was dying to see it. He agreed. Bubble paid for dinner and tried to pay for the movie tickets too but I insisted that I would do it because it was my idea. He was a complete gentleman all night.

When we got into the theater, the movie had already started, even though we were a good 5 minutes early. We found seats in the middle of the second row (after climbing over some large families) and tried to figure out why the movie had already started. It was also in 3D, which was very uncomfortable to watch from the second row. I knew there was a non-3D showing 45 minutes later, so I suggested we go see that one and get good seats and watch it from the beginning. He seemed ambivalent (he was excited about the 3D), but I made the executive decision to leave. When we got out of the theater, we realized we had gone into the wrong one. It was a good laugh, and we ended up getting great seats in the 3D show. Toy Story 3, by the way, was AWESOME. Throughout the whole thing, I was smiling and laughing. Definitely go see it.

After the movie, Bubble bought me ice cream and we walked around outside. By that point, he seemed to loosen up more. I want to get to know him better to see if there is a darker side to him. I bet there is. Self excluded, people are always on their best behavior on first dates (I tend to let things slip out here and there), so it's hard to tell if you're getting an accurate picture of who they really are. When we said goodbye, it was again a hug and a "Had a great time". I'd love to go out with Bubble again, and hopefully see more sides of him.

Date #5: The Catch

Tonight's date was with The Catch. He's 25 and about to start law school. We have been talking online this past week, and his emails were all very thoughtful, fun, and creative, so I had a feeling that we would have fun together. We met at Cleveland Park Bar and Grill, a place nearby my apartment that I've never actually been to. The place has a nice roof deck and bar up there, and it happened to be the night of Game 7 of the NBA finals, so the place was packed. We ordered a pitcher of beer while we waiting for a table. When we were seated, we ordered delicious crab dip and shared a pizza. We ended up staying for over 4 hours.

I felt instantly at ease with The Catch. Physically, he was very cute. He's tall, and it's clear that he works out a lot. He has a contagious smile. I was thinking of nicknames for him all night, but he has so much going for him that it was hard to focus on just one thing. First, I thought of calling him Happy or Smiley, because he just seemed to be comfortable with himself and fun-loving. But as I got to know him, I learned that he really is an amazing guy that any girl would be lucky to date. He is intelligent and driven, but not at all condescending like I've found some DC men to be. He really took the time to get to know me and listened well. He made me laugh and laughed at my jokes. He talked a lot about his family and how close he is to his brother and mom. He even mentioned how he has a tradition around Christmas of baking cookies with his mom. We bonded over beagles and we both whipped out pictures of our dogs at the same time. I was especially impressed at the way he talked about a charity project he created, which was featured on Fox News. He seemed so humble, though it was pretty amazing what he did. He says he's a good communicator, and we talked about everything. I even felt comfortable enough that I showed him the one picture of myself with the really, really short lesbian hair. There wasn't a whole lot of flirting going on, just great conversation.

While I think feeling comfortable is crucial in a relationship, is it good to feel so comfortable so fast?

When we left, we hugged goodbye and said we had a great time and should do it again. I do want to do it again. If it doesn't end up working out between us, I know he will make some girl very happy.

Date #4: Mr. Bach

Pre-date notes: I have been looking forward to this one for a while. I don't know too much about this guy, but he is just so darn cute! He's 6'0, (yay, they get taller every date!), 31 years old, and reminds me a little of Chris L. from this season's Bachelorette, but with shaggier hair and maybe a bigger build. But I love Chris L., so if he resembles him at all, this might be a longer night than the past couple. Dating every night is getting tiring, but not as tiring as it is keeping track of all the men total. I have a lot of dates in the works, and I'm trying to make them each feel important. It's kind of interesting watching Bachelorette at the same time of this blog project. I have a new respect for Ali. At least the men I'm dating don't have to hang out together at cocktail parties.

Post-date notes: If every date went this well, I wouldn't be able to keep this blog going. He really did look like Chris L., so I think I'm going to have to nickname him Mr. Bach (short for Bachelorette). We met at The Guards in Georgetown, a bar that I haven't been to since probably my first year in DC. On the weekends, the Guards has big dance parties in the basement with amazing 80s music and drunken debauchery. So, when Mr. Bach suggested we go there for our date, I chuckled to myself but was happy to give it a mid-week shot.

I walked into the bar and saw Mr. Bach sitting at the bar, watching the baseball game and playing with his Blackberry. I got a little nervous that he wasn't super excited to be there. He said he had just worked a 13 hour day, but still, put your phone away. Fortunately, after a few minutes, he got a second wind and decided to pay attention to me, and after that, the conversation flowed seamlessly. He seemed genuinely interested in getting to know me, and we had a good balance of asking each other questions and laughing. Halfway through, I was wondering, "Does he like me as much as I like him?". There wasn't really any direct flirting going on, especially compared to Non-LP. We didn't have much physical contact, but I made sure to sit facing directly toward him, and we had good eye contact. We stayed at the bar for maybe 2 hours. At one point, I told him that I was having a good time and I was enjoying his company, and he said he was having a good time too and was glad I came. Still, I wasn't sure if he was feeling it. I could tell he was having a fine time, because he kept saying he was in no rush, and when we both finished our drinks, he said he'd be glad to stay for another. He wasn't coming on strong, but gave me subtle hints that he was interested. I didn't want to misread them though.

Finally, around 10:45, we finished our drinks and decided to call it a night. We walked outside and started to look for the nearest bus stop for me, but he kissed me! And he said he'd been wanting to do it for awhile by that point. Whew! I was so relieved to hear that. I told him we'd have to get together again, and we made a date for Sunday. I'm excited!

Date #3: Babyface

Pre-date notes: Tonight's date is the first one I am actually excited about. This guy (yet to be nicknamed) is from Nashville, somewhat into country music, 5'9, 29 years old, a "management analyst", and he played on the same kickball league as me. Actually, I looked at his picture again and one of the girls on his team looked familiar. I may or may not have played kickball and flip cup against him. He has short brown hair and the ultimate baby face. Oh, just figured out his nickname. His pictures are all really cute, and he has more than 10 of them, so it's probably not false advertising.

Post-date: Ugh. That one dragged on too long. I met Babyface at Kramerbooks in Dupont. I really like this place. It's a small bookstore with a bar, coffee shop, and full restaurant attached. He chose the location, and did a nice job. Babyface really is cute, but also has a deep enough voice and a 5 o'clock shadow that he doesn't come across as a young kid. My initial thoughts were, "Ooh, this one could be good."

We were seated at a table and I didn't realize he thought we were coming for dinner. I had already eaten dinner at home, and the menu didn't have any appetizers at all, or anything under $15, it seemed! So, I had to just sit there and watch him eat. He did graciously offer to just go somewhere else, but I didn't make a big deal of it. As soon as the conversation started, things went downhill. This guy is really into himself. He talked for probably 90% of the evening. He told me all about his job, the pluses and minuses, his boss, his grad school, his GRE's that he "kicked ass" on. We briefly talked about our commonalities (kickball, karaoke), but he didn't ask me any questions. I had to throw in my own bits and pieces awkwardly, to which he would look at me, nod his head, and talk about himself again. I may have egged him on by asking him questions, but whenever he finished a story, he would just purse his lips together in kind of a smirk and nod his head, just begging to be asked something else. I don't like writing mean things about my dates in this blog, but really...it was rough. I was dying inside toward the end. We took the metro together, both heading in the same direction, and I asked him the simple question, "How long have you lived in your apartment?" I swear, he started to answer it right outside the restaurant and didn't finish until we were ON THE TRAIN. Ok, so this one was not right for me, obviously. He was cute though, really.

I find it hilarious that his profile states "I love a good conversation. It doesn't have to be peppered with wit or enlightenment, but if it is, that's great. I just want to be comfortable sitting across from or sitting beside the woman I'm with. If we can talk about anything and it comes naturally, I think I will be comfortable." Yeah, I'm pretty sure you'd be comfortable talking to a wall.

Too harsh?

Date #2: Non-LP

I was not excited about tonight's date with Non-LP. This was the first date I set up after sending out my blog link to people, and I had started worrying that I wouldn't be able to get any dates at all. This was the one that I thought was an LP (Little Person). But, I'm not allowed to cancel, so I met him tonight in Chinatown.

Besides seeing his little pictures, I knew that Non-LP was 25, " 5'8 ", well-traveled, a grad student, a skier, and intelligent. We met at Fado in Chinatown, an Irish pub chain restaurant with a nice beer selection but no happy hour specials. I didn't realize, but tonight was pub trivia. It didn't start until 8:00 though, and I was so tired from not sleeping well last night that I told him I'd need a rain check.

When I saw Non-LP, I was very pleasantly surprised. He was not a little person (check), and he was much, much cuter than in his pictures. He was well dressed and wore glasses, which I have always liked. We were comfortable with each other and I laughed a lot. Non-LP is VERY well traveled, and we did have a lot in common. He is kind of a typical DC guy. At one point, he pulled out his ID badge, thinking it would impress me. Hmm. Wrong person to show that off to. He is working on a masters in public policy, and his specialty in pub trivia is politics. My specialty, on the other hand, is pop culture. I know that in DC, I have to expect that men will be into politics, but I just hope that we can find other things to connect on. Now, Non-LP also knew the boy band that sang "Calculus", so I gave him a high five for that (the band was 2Gether...and I should stop talking boy bands on my first dates).

Pretty quickly, I was glad I didn't cancel. I had a good time, but Non-LP was bringing on the flirtation hard core and I wasn't really feeling it. For example, he kept patting my leg and brushing my hand. When he came back from the restroom, he suavely slid his stool superclosetomine. I think he wanted to stay longer, but I told him I should be heading home. Again, we walked to the metro, hugged goodbye, and said we'd talk later.

Date #1: MmmBop

The first date was a good start to this little project. I met up for a drink with a boy I now call MmmBop. We went to James Hoban's in Dupont Circle. Yesterday was the World Cup in Dupont, so the bar (a big Irish pub) was out of almost all of their beers on tap. James Hoban's is right in the middle of Dupont, with a big patio out front. It was hot out today, so we sat outside for some great people watching. They have good happy hour specials from 4-7 every day, but we didn't try any of the food. (http://www.dchappyhours.com)

I found MmmBop on OkCupid. Here's what I knew about him: He was 5'10, 26 years old, a lawyer in DC, similar religious views, similar taste in music, fun sense of humor. Some of his pictures were cuter than others.

I got to the bar 10 minutes early, and he was already there. Very punctual, good boy. He was dressed straight out of a Vineyard Vines catalog, though he would later swear that he is nothing like the typical Georgetown boy. Actually, I think I really insulted him when I told him he'd fit in well in the Georgetown area. He seemed a bit nervous for maybe 3 minutes but loosened up nicely. MmmBop was polite, smart, and adorably goofy. I wasn't super attracted to him, but he was cute. We talked about DC, our families, our jobs, TV shows, and...music. Though I realize I am in NO POSITION TO JUDGE, I have actually found a man with a worse ipod than my own. I know, you don't believe me, but it's true. He has more than 2 Miley Cyrus songs, and he refers to her by first name. He has multiple Hanson songs. I mentioned the Backstreet Boys concert I just went to, and he said he had wanted to go to it. Again, I have a terrible music collection, but I feel like as a girl, I have a little more leeway.

We stayed at the bar for about 2 hours and had 2 beers each. The conversation was great. I poked fun at him lightly, and he responded well. There were no awkward moments at all. However, I didn't feel a romantic connection. After he paid and we left, he walked me to the metro. We both said we had a lot of fun, and he said he would call me later.

If MmmBop asks for a second date, I am going to tell him that I had a lot of fun and I would be interested in getting to know him as a friend. It's easier saying it that doing it. I am ashamed to admit that in the past, I have faded people. To those from past generations, fading means basically disappearing..not returning phone calls or emails until the person gives up. I've faded people and I've been faded myself, and I know from experience that I would ALWAYS rather have someone tell me straight up that he isn't interested than wonder what the deal is. So, that is Rule #2 of this experience...I will not leave anyone hanging. Rule #1 is easy...say yes to a date. Rule #2, not as easy for me, but I think it will make me a better person.

Tonight's date was moved to Sunday...a double header!

I told a few people that I was having my first date tonight, with a guy I will call Tartan because of the sweet Tartan hat he is wearing in a picture. He's unemployed and says things like "holler" on gchat, but he seems alright. He asked to reschedule to Sunday, and since I am still hungover from the Backstreet Boys concert last night (awesome!), I am perfectly happy to do so. That means, however, that I will have two dates lined up for Sunday. My other date is with *Kevin. This was the first date I set up after sending out my blog link, and it was done very impulsively. I got nervous all of the sudden that I wouldn't be able to actually find 40 dates, let alone one! So, I hopped over to OkCupid.com and let the first guy to talk to me ask me out. Normally, I ignore boys that I'm not interested in when they instant message me. But, Kevin asked me out and I said yes. Yesterday, I showed my coworkers his profile, and we think he might be a LP (Little Person). Hahaha. I can't cancel, so it should be interesting. Hopefully my writing will do justice to the awkwardness that is about to ensue.

I also have 2 other dates next week, so I am off to a good start. Thanks to everyone who has been racking their brains for single friends in the area. Send them my way!

It's on like Donkey Kong

I have my first two dates lined up, for Thursday and Monday.

I feel like Julie and Julia

Yesterday I broke up with my boyfriend, and I let myself cry for one night. Today, I am ready to start fresh. It's not that I didn't care about him or that I'm not disappointed that our relationship ended, but I know it had to be done. I don't have any hard feelings, but I also know that I wasn't getting what I wanted.

So, here goes my summer experiment. The timing is perfectly aligned with my summer vacation from teaching. I have plenty of free time to devote to myself and to meeting new men. I don't think anyone will actually read this besides my friends and my mom, but at least I won't have to tell the same stories 3 times.

The plan is to go on 40 dates from now until Labor Day. Each date has to take place in a new location, somewhere in the metro DC area. I can go on more than one date with the men, but I can only include TWO dates per man toward my 40 count. If I have a third date, I won't necessarily write about it, unless it was particularly memorable.

Now, how do I plan on getting 40 dates in one summer, you may be wondering. Well, I suspect many of them will come from an online dating website. However, I am not restricting myself to this, and I have told my friends about this project and will ask them to introduce me to their single friends. I vow to accept any first date offered, unless I feel unsafe. I've found that with online dating, it's far too easy to dismiss a guy for a petty reason, because there are so many options. However, I could be letting someone great pass by. Therefore, I'm expanding my horizons and I'm keeping an open mind. I will go on a date with you, but from there, I make no promises about what I write about the date.

My name is changed to protect my own privacy, and I will not use any the real names of my dates. I will likely give them nicknames, because, after all, 40 dates is a lot to keep track of.
